"Superbugs" is a term used to describe strains of bacteria that are resistant to the majority of antibiotics commonly used today. They do this by killing the bacteria or by keeping them from copying themselves or reproducing. Before scientists discovered antibiotics in the 1920s, many people died with minor bacterial infections. Then penicillin was discovered in the 1940s and suddenly people could survive what used to be fatal infections. Fast forward to 21st century and we are slowly heading towards an era where superbugs will define our future. The diminishing impact of antibiotics is a global health crisis and India has become its ground zero.
Superheroes Against Superbugs is an initiative that was launched in Hyderabad in 2018 to build a community dedicated to tackling this crisis. Superheroes Against Superbugs uses comics and other innovative methods to engage with school students & create awareness about antibiotics, its use and the impact of its overuse. So for this World Antibiotic Awareness Week, we bring to you this special episode of The Suno India Show featuring Dr. Ponnari Gottipati, a Research Management, Science Education and Engagement consultant in Hyderabad who has experience of working with educational organisations. You will also hear from Dr Somdatta Karak, a trained molecular and cellular Neuroscientist who handles science communication at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB)
