Why does the central government pass new labor laws in haste? Is it simplifying it for the labor or for the corporate? As part of the series of codes that merge the central labour laws, the centre has passed the Code on wages bill in Lok Sabha on 30th July 2019, and on 2nd August 2019 in Rajya Sabha. With the parliament budget session’s extension till August 7, the Modi government 2.0 has already passed more key bills, than any of the last four Lok Sabha budget sessions did.
The code subsumes the Payment of Wages Act (1936), the Minimum Wages Act (1948), the Payment of Bonus Act (1965) and the Equal Remuneration Act (1976). In this episode of The Suno India Show, Chandan Kumar, a Labour Rights Activist who works with the Working Peoples' Charter talks about it.
