In India, The Mental Health Care Act was passed on 7 April 2017 and came into force from 29th May, 2018. This Act aims to provide mental healthcare and services for persons with mental illness and to protect, promote and fulfil the rights of such persons during delivery of mental healthcare and services.
Ahead of the World Mental Health Day, we reached out to Dr Soumitra Pathare, Director for the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy at the Indian Law Society to know more about this act and the legal aspects of mental health in India.
