On August 5, 2019, the Central government abrogated article 370 of the Indian constitution that gave the state of Jammu and Kashmir its autonomy. The Indian government also issued a military-style lockdown and a complete blocking of communication. Immediately after August 5, Kashmiris could not speak to anyone over the phone, or use the internet. The state has now partially restored the internet by letting the residents use 2G internet and broadband. These measures have badly dented the economy of the region. Just when Kashmir was opening up, COVID-19 struck and the all-India lockdown was instituted.
In this episode of The Suno India Show, freelance journalist, Bilal Hussain spoke to the Kashmiri entrepreneurs who said that their businesses simply closed down and that they had to let go of people working for them. In this podcast, Kashmiri locals including an aspiring chef, hotelier, industrialist, IT businessman, and civil society shared their experiences and anguish.
