The Ministry of Road Transports and Highways recently notified all national highway toll plazas to dedicate all lanes except one cashless lanes using FastTag. The Ministry is effectively making FastTag mandatory from December 1, 2019. FastTag is India's version of the electronic toll system being implemented using the ISO standard equivalent for RFID based toll collection. All new vehicles since 2018 in the country have been sold with FastTag installed at the time of registration. To discuss the impact and design of FastTag, we have Srikanth Lakshmanan who runs a collective called Cashless Consumer focusing on cashless payments.
